Thanksgiving 2006

12/08/09

We spent four days in October and ten days in November at Possum Trot.  It was a wonderful time for working on the cabin and grounds, hunting (I got a really nice buck!), relaxing and soaking up the essence of the place.  One of my favorite things to do is to sit on the patio in the morning with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate in my hand and just watch the sun come up.  This time we got to see geese fly over on their way south and one morning we watched a group of about six bluebirds as they flew around below us in the meadow.  We saw wild turkeys, vultures by the score and we cut and split about a year's worth of firewood so we won't get behind on that score for a while.  Our weather was perfect, hovering between 25 at night to about 65 in the daytime.  That's -3 to about 19 for our friends down under!  For the most part, it was clear the entire time except for the first day and the day we left - "bluebird days" as my father used to say!

For our trip down in October, we were loaded to the gills.  Our new Tacoma was full back seat and back end!  This was taken in our driveway in Noblesville as we pulled away.  The weather was generally really nice both trips and we tried to open our eyes and soak up everything around us as we communed in this special place again.
Thanksgiving dinner was a typical feast.  Joseph's girlfriend, Phebe, joined us for the holiday.  That's Cloudy Bay in the background.  We can't get Stefano Lubiana here!  There was a bit of R & R most days....

We mowed the yard this year with a lawn mower!  There's something to crow about!  It almost looks civilized, doesn't it?

The old man in his favorite chair!  I usually don't wear this redneck hat, but it was raining when we left home and I forgot my more typical head attire (Akubra, "newsie" cap...)   I picked this up at Wal-Mart (Ugh!) on a shopping foray to re-supply.
We paused in the afternoon before Thanksgiving to have a little bubbly on the patio.  It's another nice tradition... The upstairs now has a new floor and we've moved a few things around.  We even took our original shelves from our house in Indianapolis (1975) and sanded and repainted them in the traditional blue of the cabin.  It's really roughing it isn't it?  Sorry, but we can't help ourselves.  We plan to live here for long periods one day and why shouldn't it be comfortable?
After one hike we came back to a sky full of black vultures.  We couldn't believe how many there were.  We counted at least seventy.  We cleaned out the wood hutch down to debris that had been there since steel beer cans were around and then we placed treated lumber under the stacks.  It has never been this full.  We should be set for a while, although I would like to not get as low as we did this last year!
